About Mr. Allen

Jack Allen has taught Instrumental music at Kestrel since January of 2006 and was the Kestrel Heights Teacher of the Year in 2008-2009. He is married to Reverend Jeanne Allen, a United Church of Christ minister and pastoral counsellor.He has a Bachelor of Music Education Degree from Mount Union College in Alliance, Ohio and a Master of Music Education Degree from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania. He is a member of the North Carolina Music Education Association, The NCMEA Orchestra Section, The North Carolina Band Masters and theNational Association for Music Education. The Dixie Classic Music Festival has twice honored him for his service to music education.Jack and Jeanne’s children honored them by placing a brick in the NAFME Walk of Fame.

Mr. Allen taught in the Steubenville, Ohio Public Schools for 7 years before moving to Durham in 1976.That fall he became the Band Director at Carrington Middle School and at Northern High School.The growth of the band program led to the addition of an assistant director and eventually Mr. Allen became the full time band director and chair of the Arts Department at Northern.He also served for a year as chairman of the Northern High School Site-Based Decision Making Committee. While Mr. Allen was at Northern the band performed at Walt Disney World in Florida many times and was invited to help celebrate the 10thand 25thanniversaries of Walt Disney World.Another high point in his tenure at Northern was a performance given on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C. Mr. Allen retired from NorthernIn the spring of 2004after a 35-year public school teaching career.

In the fall of 2005 instrumental music returned to Kestrel, with Mr. Gene Dugan as director of the band and Mrs. Jeanne Allen (Mr. Allen’s wife) as the director of the string ensemble.When Mr. Dugan became ill in mid-year Mr. Allen agreed to finish out the year for him.In the fall of 2006 Mr. Allen became the director of all Kestrel ensembles.

Mr. & Mrs. Allen have three grown children.Christy (an elementary music teacher), her husband Charles and their children Connor and Ali reside in Lagrange North Carolina. Neil (who works for the architectural firm that designed Kestrel’s High School building), his wife Carolyn (who is the Arts Partnership Coordinator at Sandy Ridge Arts Magnet Elementary in Durham) and their daughters Faye, Lily, Lucy and Suzy live here in Durham. Sharon, her husband K.J. & their son Jeremiah live in Jordan, Montana where K. J. is the pastor of the Jordan Community Bible Church & Sharon is the 911 coordinator for the McCone County sheriff’s department.

Mr. Allen enjoys singing in the choir of United Church of Chapel Hill, reading and working with computers.
